Lake Wylie Facts

One of 11 – and the second oldest – lakes in the Catawba River chain, Lake Wylie began as Catawba Lake with the construction of the Wylie Dam in 1904. The lake was renamed Lake Wylie in 1960 after Dr. Walker Gill Wylie, former president of Southern Power Company, which merged with Duke Power in 1927.

Lake Wylie stretches 32 miles from the Mountain Island Dam on the northern end to the Wylie Dam on the southern end. An active marine commission monitors the safety and environmental aspects both on and around the lake.

  • 325 miles of shoreline bordering both North and South Carolina
  • 12,455 surface acres of water
  • 94 feet deep at maximum depth (the average depth is 23 feet)
